We follow the government’s Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage (for children aged 3 years to 5 years old) so that children joining our Reception class build on their learning experiences from pre-school or nursery and achieve secure foundations that enable them to transition successfully onto the next stage of their education at St Lawrence.

Our Trust's Statement of Intent

The Howard Partnership Trust will bring out the best by providing a rich experience both within and beyond the classroom. This will enable all our young people to thrive personally and academically, overcome challenges and make a positive contribution to society.

Our Curriculum Statement of Intent

At St Lawrence, we will ensure that learning flourishes through our curriculum, empowering our children to 'Be the Change' they want to see in the world.

'Be the Change' Whole School Curriculum

Our school has been on a journey to design and implement a whole school philosophy and approach to curriculum based on the themes of Impact, Sustainability, Fragility and Equality. Through 'Impact' our children learn to recognise how humans can impact positively and create lasting legacy. Through 'Sustainability' our children learn to value sustainable ways of living. Through 'Fragility' our children learn to value and protect our planet, its resources, and its life. Finally, through 'Equality' children learn to promote equity and opportunity though valuing self and diversity.

Arranging the school curriculum in this way and providing children with meaningful opportunities to make positive contributions empowers our children to 'Be the Change' they wish to see in the world. In each of year groups children follow a learning theme that starts with an overarching question such as:

  • How can we protect our local environment?
  • Why are plants important?
  • Why do our polar regions need protecting?

Children then build deep curriculum knowledge enriched through memorable experiences that then enables them to address this question in a 'Great Works'. These take place at the end of each half term for every year group where the children act collectively in response to an environmental or social deficit that has been identified. In recognising the positive impact of their actions our children build resilience, self-belief and also an understanding that if we are to address both our local and global challenges, we must first start with ourselves by being the change that we wish to see our own worlds.

Our 'Be the Change' Curriculum approach is now fully embedded across our school, providing our children with the knowledge, skills and opportunity to make positive contributions. From building local habitats for our wildlife to reducing carbon footprint projects, and from litter picking initiatives in our locality to cooking with seasonal, sustainable sourced ingredients; our children share their learning beyond the classroom to make positive contributions to the world around them.

Parental Consent and Right to Withdraw

Religious Education: We follow the Surrey Locally Agreed Syllabus. Understanding the beliefs and opinions of other is an important part of demonstrating mutual respect and tolerance (one of the defined British Values). Religious and Non-Religious Worldviews (such as humanism) are taught to raise understanding and awareness. Parents do have a right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and should book an appointment with the Headteacher via the office should you wish to pursue this option.

Relationship and Health Education: Opportunities to understand the content of the parts of the curriculum related to puberty and human reproduction are provided to parents before these are taught. We will also seek parental consent. Should you wish to withdraw consent please do book a meeting with one of the senior leadership teams who will meet with you. Please note that the Science aspects of the curriculum related to this are statutory and children cannot be withdrawn from these elements.
